Stern is married with two children.  He is currently vice president of district operations for the Mecklenburg County Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and a long-time member of the councilís executive board.  He is a member of the troop committee for Boy Scout Troop 118 in Charlotte and president of the Skybusters Hunt Club.
