Bicycle Safety Rodeos
Crumley Roberts uses bicycle safety rodeos to teach children the proper techniques of riding their bikes including appropriate hand signals, the parts of the bicycle, proper use of helmets and the skills needed to bicycle safely.
We first go through the rules of the road and the three main hand signals used while riding on the streets.
Secondly, we talk about helmets and their purpose and then we teach each child how to properly fit a bicycle helmet. Lastly, we have each child navigate their way through a bicycle course that includes: A street course where each child will use their stop hand signal, left turn hand signal and right turn hand signal. This accomplishes two objectives, first to learn and use the appropriate hand signals and also to teach the child how to balance the bicycle with one hand as they use their hand signals.
Next, they make their way through a slalom course to help simulate having to steer their way safely around objects that may come up unexpectedly while riding their bicycle. Additionally, the main component we have set up is a figure eight course to help each child to ride with control on turns and braking.
