The Great Hangup Campaign4/30/2010
Greensboro, NC – WFMY
News 2 and its partner, Crumley Roberts, Attorneys at Law, are working together
to make the roads safer in the Piedmont Triad with a project called The Great
Hang Up. The Great Hang Up is ongoing community service campaign to stop people
from using their mobile devices while driving and eliminate accidents caused by
distracted driving. Through a series of special reports and community
outreach programs, WFMY News 2 will spread the word about the real dangers of
talking on the phone, texting, checking email or surfing the web while behind
the wheel. During the week of May 3rd WFMY News 2 will devote time
in each newscast to discuss The Great Hang Up. Also, WFMY News 2 anchors,
Frank Mickens and Tanya Rivera, will hit the streets delivering a personal
message to local high schools, businesses and community events.
Every driver, regardless of experience, will be asked to
sign a pledge stating they understand the dangers associated with distracted
driving, and that they promise to put down their phones while driving.
WFMY News 2 has made this pledge form available to everyone on digtriad.com,
along with detailed information about The Great Hang Up. The link is: http://www.digtriad.com/news/hangup/default.aspx.
A complete list of upcoming events and news stories related to The Great Hang
Up will also be available on the site.
WFMY News 2 President and General Manager, Deborah Hooper
had this to say about the Great Hang Up, “We know that driving while using a
mobile device will be a tough habit for many of us to break. But the
dangers are too great to ignore. This program will show why hanging up
our phones while driving is as important as putting on our seat belts. We
realize this is a tough decision but the results will be worth the effort.”
According to a study by the University of Utah, using a cell
phone, handheld, Bluetooth or otherwise, delays a driver’s reactions as much as
having a blood alcohol level at the legal limit. The study also points
out that drivers who use handheld devices are four times more likely to get
into crashes serious enough to injure themselves. All of the facts point
to one thing; now is the time for The Great Hang Up.
