Carmuda Triangle? Crawleigh?
What do these names have in common? They represent creative nicknames for the major construction of the I-40/440 project in Wake County. While the Triangle region prepares for the rebuild, the NC Department of Transportation has added a little spice to the project in asking for witty names for the construction. The name the project idea comes from the Los Angeles’ I-405 corridor, which was closed for 53 hours, and became known as "Carmageddon." Similarly, in Columbus, Ohio, residents voted to name a three-year reconstruction project, "Crawlumbus."
The I-40/440 rebuild of 11 miles from U.S. 1 in Cary to U.S. 64/264 in Raleigh will begin next spring and is estimated to last three years. Drivers can expect lane closures, as concrete, asphalt, shoulders and ramps on the 30-year old road will be replaced.
