Camp Lejeune Water Contamination
Camp Lejeune has multiple water treatment plants to provide drinking water across its approximate 250 square miles of land. With the assistance of outside experts, the USMC determined in the ‘80s that the drinking water at Camp Lejeune was contaminated by volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It appears that the contamination originated from a nearby industrial dry-cleaning site that had poisoned the water wells even before the base was ever opened in the ‘40s.
