What Is the DePuy Attune® Knee Replacement?
The DePuy Attune® knee implant is a complete knee replacement device. It is designed to improve range of motion and stability in the affected joint, and was advertised as one of the most advanced knee replacement devices on the market. Released in 2011, the DePuy Attune® knee replacement consists of both metal and plastic components that make up the joint, and it has a rotating platform design that DePuy said would reduce wear and tear on the device.
Although it was FDA-approved, DePuy simply used the FDA’s 510(k) clearance process. The company only had to show that the device was substantially similar to another device already on the market. DePuy was able to get its Attune® knee replacement device passed through without strenuous testing, and the resulting failure rates have caused severe injuries.
Problems with the DePuy Attune® Knee Replacement
One study conducted in 2017 revealed that the DePuy Attune® knee replacement device had an unusually high rate of loosening. In fact, more than 230 reports of device loosening have been filed with the FDA. Other problems reported with the device include fractures of the device and the surrounding bones, tibial loosening, and early wear and tear. Many patients need revision surgery.
Symptoms of a failed DePuy Attune® knee replacement include:
- Decreased range of motion
- Sideways or backwards movement of the knee
- Instability when standing or putting weight on the implant
- Unexplained warmth in the knee months after surgery
In September 2017, the first lawsuit regarding the DePuy Attune® knee replacement was filed. Since then, several more lawsuits have been filed. It is estimated that there could be hundreds of Attune® knee replacement lawsuits, which may be combined into multi-district litigation (MDL) to let them go through the legal process quickly. Our defective medical device attorneys in North Carolina will discuss your options for pursuing justice in a DePuy Attune® knee replacement lawsuit. You may be able to receive a settlement for lost wages, medical bills, pain and suffering, and other damages.
