Think Again About Jaywalking!
A recent analysis by the Charlotte Observer found that Charlotte has seen a drastic increase in pedestrian-related crashes and deaths, and is coming off a record year of fatalities. So far this year, 14 pedestrians have died in incidents involving motor vehicles. In response, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police force will begin cracking down against both jaywalkers and unlawful drivers to raise safety awareness.
The initiative is targeted towards jaywalkers and aggressive drivers, especially during the morning, lunch, and evening rush hours. On Monday, officers on foot and bicycle in the uptown vicinity penalized 41 individuals with tickets. Tickets can cost jaywalkers up to $213, including court fees, and unlawful drivers failing to yield to pedestrians $223, including court fees.
